Santo Domingo

Explore the First City of the New World and the Modern, Largest Metropolis of the Caribbean

In 1496, the first Europeans settled in what is now the capital of the Dominican Republic, although it is officially said that the brother of Christopher Columbus founded the city in 1498. Santo Domingo is therefore the oldest European-built city in the New World. In 1990, UNESCO declared the historic colonial district on the western bank of the Ozama River a World Heritage Site.

During the city tour, you will see landmarks such as the Columbus House, the Faro a Colón, and the oldest stone-paved street in the New World – the Calle de las Damas. You will also visit the first cathedral ever built on American soil.

In the colonial district, you will have plenty of time for shopping, strolling, and enjoying an included lunch.

Another highlight of the program is the visit to the “Three Eyes Cave,” an open-roof limestone cave featuring crystal-clear blue lagoons. A fascinating glimpse into Santo Domingo’s “underworld.”
